Feasibility study on the production of low melt flow rate recycled polypropylene from postconsumer waste
2024-05-15 • Jutta Geier, Chiara Barretta, Jessica Hinczica, Bernd Haar, Márton Bredács, Andreas Witschnigg, Erwin Mayrbäurl, Gernot Oreški
Abstract Polypropylene (PP) recyclates face limitations in their use due to lower qualities compared with virgin PP, resulting from contaminations and the mixing of different PP grades. In particular, their high melt flow rate (MFR) hinders their suitability for applications requiring low MFR, such as pipes. This study investigates the feasibility of producing low MFR PP recyclates from packaging waste. For this purpose, recyclates were produced exclusively from manually sorted extrusion blow molding grades and co…

Injection Molding Simulation of Polyoxymethylene Using Crystallization Kinetics Data and Comparison with the Experimental Process
2022-03-23 • Theresia Schrank, Michael Berer, Bernd Haar, Bruno Ramôa, Thomas Lucyshyn, Michael Feuchter, Gerald Pinter, Vito Speranza, Roberto Pantani
It is well known that the processing conditions in polymer processing have a high impact on the resulting material morphology and consequently the component’s mechanical behavior. However, especially for semicrystalline polymers, the tools available for predicting the final morphology of injection molding parts still have significant limitations. In order to investigate the potential of injection molding simulation for the prediction of the morphology, POM homopolymer specimens were injection molded. The crystalli…

Analysis of the Fire Behavior of Polymers (PP, PA 6 and PE-LD) and Their Improvement Using Various Flame Retardants
2020-12-16 • Dieter Hohenwarter, Hannelore Mattausch, Christopher Fischer, Matthias Berger, Bernd Haar
The fire behavior of polymers is examined primarily with the time-dependent heat release rate (HRR) measured with a cone calorimeter. The HRR is used to examine the fire behavior of materials with and without flame retardants, especially Polypropylene (PP-Copo) and Polyethylene (PE-LD). Polypropylene is stored for up to 99 days under normal conditions and the heat release rate shows especially changes about 100 s after irradiation with cone calorimeter, which may be caused by aging effects. The effect of crosslink…
