ROSSMIX 2.0: A Simplified Meso‐Scale Eddy Closure Applied to a Realistic Ocean Model
2025-04-30 • Carsten Eden, Jan Dettmer
Abstract A new closure, ROSSMIX 2.0, for the effect of meso‐scale eddies in non‐eddy‐resolving ocean models is presented and evaluated. It combines aspects of several previous closures in a simplified approach: local linear stability analysis is used to predict the vertical and lateral shape of eddy correlations, while a wave energy equation co‐integrated in the ocean model predicts their amplitudes. The new closure is implemented and evaluated with good success in an idealized channel model of vertical and latera…

Towards realistic ocean flow decomposition using optimal balance with time-averaging
2025-01-20 • Silvano Rosenau, Manita Chouksey, Carsten Eden
Decomposing oceanic and atmospheric flow fields into their slowly evolving balanced components and fast evolving wave components is essential for understanding processes like spontaneous wave emission. To study these processes, the decomposition into the linear geostrophic (slow) and non-geostrophic (fast) components is not precise enough. More precise methods, such as optimal balance and nonlinear normal mode decomposition, account for nonlinear effects, but their application has so far been limited to idealized …

The Transient IDEMIX Model as a Nonorographic Gravity Wave Parameterization in an Atmospheric Circulation Model
2025-05-01 • Brenda Quinn, Carsten Eden, Dirk Olbers, Georg Sebastian Voelker, Ulrich Achatz
Abstract The Internal wave Dissipation, Energy and Mixing (IDEMIX) model presents a novel way of parameterizing internal gravity waves in the atmosphere. Using a continuous full wave spectrum in the energy balance equation and integrating over all vertical wavenumbers and frequencies results in prognostic equations for the energy density of gravity waves in multiple azimuthal compartments. It includes their non‐dissipative interaction with the mean flow, allowing for an evolving and local description of momentum f…

FRIDOM: A new modular Python based framework for geophysical fluid simulations
2025-03-15 • Silvano Rosenau, Carsten Eden
Numerical modeling frameworks are essential for advancing our understanding of oceanic and atmospheric processes. Traditional ocean models, often written in Fortran, offer high computational efficiency but can be challenging for young scientists due to their complexity and lack of GPU support. We present the Framework for Idealized Ocean Models (FRIDOM), a Python-based and modular framework for fluid simulations. Inspired by machine learning frameworks like TensorFlow and PyTorch, FRIDOM’s flexible design…
