Abstract The low dose dexamethasone stimulation test (LDDST) is routinely used in canine medicine but in the few cases in guinea pigs diagnosed with hypercortisolism, the adrenocorticotropic hormone (ACTH) stimulation test was used. The objective of the authors was to conduct a pilot study and find out if the standard test used in dogs can be used in this species. A 4-year-old intact female hairless guinea pig showed bilaterally enlarged adrenal glands and high cortisol levels. Urine was collected and, after initi…

Abstract In this publication various serum biochemistry and haematology parameters were determined from blood samples obtained from captive adult individuals of an exotic quail species, the mountain quail ( Oreortyx pictus , Douglas, 1829). Venipuncture was performed in the second half of the breeding season from six roosters (males) and seven hens (females). During the examination, in addition to the haematological elements, basic parameters of serum enzyme levels, the products of protein metabolism, uric acid an…

Primary Urinary Bladder Tumors in Three Guinea Pigs (Cavia Porcellus)
2023-08-20 • Anna Linda Nógrádi, Iain Cope, Attila Arany‐Tóth, Linda Müller, Dóra Csatári, Csaba Hetyey, Zoltán Dudás-Györki, Ferenc Manczur, Norbert Schuster,...
Urinary bladder tumors are not common in guinea pigs, but case numbers being diagnosed have increased in the past years. The authors present 3 referred cases of primary urinary bladder tumors in pet guinea pigs diagnosed using diagnostic imaging (CT, radiography, and ultrasonography) and exploratory laparotomy. Excision was not possible in the first case as the tumor was located at the neck of the urinary bladder and the owner opted for intraoperative euthanasia. The second and third cases both had tumors originat…

Use of skin flaps for reconstructive surgery in guinea pigs ( Cavia porcellus )
2022-09-09 • Anna Linda Nógrádi, Dóra Csatári, Iain Cope, Péter Kertész, Csaba Hetyey, Tibor Németh
Abstract Background The aim of the study was to investigate the use of single‐pedicle advancement flaps in the fixed skin regions of the head, neck and paravertebral region in guinea pigs. Methods Ultrasonography was performed on the guinea pigs to visualise the vascular anatomy of the looser regions of the thorax and abdomen and the more fixed paravertebral region and neck. Flap surgeries were then planned and undertaken on seven guinea pigs, with six having tumours on the lip, under the eye, the forehead, the ne…
