Trying to find Safety, to make it Speakable, and to Mourn the Losses – Children’s Recovery from Domestic Abuse
2024-10-04 • Fiona Morrison
Abstract Purpose This article addresses a gap in our understanding of children’s ‘recovery’ from domestic abuse. Whilst the impacts of domestic abuse on children have been well-documented and researched, their recovery from it has been under-theorized. By analyzing qualitative accounts on children’s participation in recovery programmes, the article uses Judith Herman’s trauma recovery model, to make the how of children’s recovery explicit. Methods Conducted in Scotland, the research involved individual qualitative…

Theoretical Grounding on Children's Participation in Research on Maltreatment
2023-09-27 • Fiona Morrison
Abstract Drawing on key concepts from childhood studies, this chapter provides a theoretical grounding for children's participation rights in research on maltreatment. The chapter discusses the sociology of childhood, tracing how it brought a focus to children's participation in research, and introduces the concepts of adultism and childism to help critique children's participation in research on maltreatment. The chapter is framed by a familiar debate on tensions between children's right to participate and their …

Intimate partner violence and child maltreatment in Scotland – Insights from nationally representative longitudinal survey data
2022-07-15 • Valeria Skafida, Fiona Morrison, John Devaney
When mothers report IPV, the extent and severity of the abuse is incrementally associated with children's experiences of parental aggression, and ethnic minority boys are far more at risk. Parental aggression should be understood within the context of the stresses associated with living with an abusive partner. We discuss the fragmented picture which surveys of children provide when interviewing mainly the mother.

Children’s human rights under COVID-19: learning from children’s rights impact assessments
2022-02-18 • E. Kay M. Tisdall, Fiona Morrison
Policy responses to COVID-19 have had dramatic impacts on children’s human rights, as much as the COVID-19 pandemic itself. In the rush to protect the human right of survival and development, new policies and their implementation magnified the challenges of taking a children’s rights approach in adult-oriented systems and institutions. This article explores these challenges, drawing on learning from the independent Children’s Rights Impact Assessment (CRIA) on policies affecting children in Scotland during ‘lockdo…

2022-06-25 • Anna Papen, Thomas Schöttker-Königer, Axel Schäfer, Fiona Morrison, B. Hollinger, Klaus J. Burkhart, R. Nietschke, Alexander Zimmerer, Nicola Maffu...
Abstract Background The Mayo Elbow Performance Score (MEPS) is a rating system consisting of four dimensions to evaluate elbow performance. It is a common tool for assessment of elbow impairments worldwide. We determined the validity and reliability of its German version (MEPS-G) after cross-cultural adaptation. Methods Six investigators examined 57 patients with elbow pathologies. The MEPS-G was compared to validated elbow scores such as the German versions of DASH, the Oxford Elbow Score, pain level and subjecti…
