Universal Nanopore Sensor for Amplification-Free and Label-Free Detection of Molecular Biomarkers
2025-08-12 • R. Xu, S. M. Saiduzzaman, Mohammad Julker Neyen Sampad, Tanner Wells, Isadora H. Cavinatto, Edward M. Bellido, Sarah Holliday, Ephraim M. Ong, Step...
Molecular diagnostics of biomarkers derived from tissues and bodily fluids are developing into a cornerstone of medical testing and potentially the foundation of a personalized medicine approach. Therefore, there is a need for universal biosensors capable of detecting different biomarker types with high performance and minimal complexity, ideally suitable for point-of-care use. Here, we present an integrated nanopore sensor for amplification-free, label-free, and quantitative detection of both proteins and nucleic…

Engineering strong magnon–phonon coupling in single CoFe nanomagnets
2025-03-26 • Sujung Kim, B. Sharif, Scott Dhuey, Thomas D. Yuzvinsky, Wei-Gang Yang, David Lederman, Holger Schmidt
Hybrid magnonic systems are promising platforms for quantum technologies, leveraging coherent coupling between magnons and phonons. Here, we demonstrate strong magnon–phonon coupling in CoFe nanomagnets, a material with high magnetostriction. Using time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr effect spectroscopy, we demonstrate strong coupling between magnonic and phononic modes in both polycrystalline and single-crystalline CoFe nanomagnets. Our findings reveal strong coupling with cooperativity values of C=20.04 for a pol…

Single molecule nanopore counting assay targeting small extracellular vesicle cargo for non-invasive monitoring of cerebral organoid development and health
2025-12-12 • S. M. Saiduzzaman, R. Xu, Mohammad Julker Neyen Sampad, Ryan N. Hoffman, Spencer T. Seiler, Quinton Brail, Viktor Yurevych, Zachary J. Walker, Tann...
Abstract Organoids are three-dimensional tissue cultures intended to replicate in vivo organs such that their function can be analyzed for applications in drug discovery, diagnostics, and research. This requires the ability to assess organoid health, development, and function on the cellular and molecular level, possibly frequently and over long periods of time. Here, we report an assay for monitoring organoid development and health by tracking the molecular cargo of small extracellular vesicles (sEV) with an inte…

Spectral analysis of light is one of the oldest and most versatile scientific methods and the basis of countless techniques and instruments. Miniaturized spectrometers have recently seen great advances, but challenges remain before they are widely deployed. We report an integrated photonic spectrometer that achieves high performance with minimal component complexity by combining imaging of light propagation patterns in multi-mode interference waveguides with machine learning analysis. We demonstrate broadband oper…

Label-free and amplification-free viral RNA quantification from primate biofluids using a trapping-assisted optofluidic nanopore platform

Viral outbreaks can cause widespread disruption, creating the need for diagnostic tools that provide high performance and sample versatility at the point of use with moderate complexity. Current gold standards such as PCR and rapid antigen tests fall short in one or more of these aspects. Here, we report a label-free and amplification-free nanopore sensor platform that overcomes these challenges via direct detection and quantification of viral RNA in clinical samples from a variety of biological fluids. The assay …
