Dispu$τ$able: the high cost of a low optical depth
2025-04-23 • Noah Sailer, Gerrit S. Farren, Simone Ferraro, M. J. White
Recent Baryonic Acoustic Oscillation (BAO) measurements from the Dark Energy Spectroscopic Instrument (DESI) are mildly discrepant ($2.2σ$) with the Cosmic Microwave Background (CMB) when interpreted within $Λ$CDM. When analyzing these data with extended cosmologies this inconsistency manifests as a $\simeq3σ$ preference for sub-minimal neutrino mass or evolving dark energy. It is known that the preference for sub-minimal neutrino mass from the suppression of structure growth could be alleviated by increasing the …

Spin versus Magic: Lessons from Gluon and Graviton Scattering
2025-08-20 • John Gargalionis, Nathan Moynihan, Sokratis Trifinopoulos, Ewan N. V. Wallace, Chris D. White, M. J. White
The quantum property of non-stabiliserness, also known as magic, plays a key role in designing quantum computing systems. How to produce, manipulate and enhance magic remains mysterious, such that concrete examples of physical systems that manifest magic behaviour are sought after. In this paper, we study two-particle scattering of gluons and gravitons in Yang--Mills theory and General Relativity, as well as their supersymmetric extensions. This provides an interesting case of two-qubit systems, differing only in …

Constraints on the dark sector from electroweak precision observables
2025-06-25 • B. M. Loizos, X. G. Wang, A. W. Thomas, M. J. White, Aleia G. Williams
We revisit the Standard Model fit to electroweak precision observables in using the latest data and the Particle Data Group (PDG) measurement of the W boson mass. The analysis is then repeated in light of the new W boson mass measurement from the Collider Detector at Fermilab (CDF) collaboration. We then introduce a dark photon to the model, placing constraints on the parameter space arising from these electroweak precision observables, both for the PDG and CDF values for the W boson mass. We also extend previous …

Probing new physics in the top sector using quantum information
2025-05-18 • Rafael Aoude, Hannah Banks, Chris D. White, M. J. White
Recent studies have shown that quantitative concepts from quantum information theory can play a role in analysing collider physics, including elucidating new physics. In this paper, we study various QI measures including magic, trace distance and fidelity distance, in generic new physics scenarios modelled by the Standard Model Effective Field Theory. We argue that such measures can indeed show up differences with respect to the pure Standard Model, and we compare our results with similar findings for the concurre…

Emergent symmetry in a two-Higgs-doublet model from quantum information and nonstabilizerness
2025-07-25 • Giorgio Busoni, John Gargalionis, Ewan N. V. Wallace, M. J. White
Studies of scattering processes in scalar models with two Higgs doublets have recently hinted at a connection between the absence of flavor-space entanglement in <a:math xmlns:a="http://www.w3.org/1998/Math/MathML" display="inline"><a:msup><a:mi mathvariant="normal">Φ</a:mi><a:mo>+</a:mo></a:msup><a:msup><a:mi mathvariant="normal">Φ</a:mi><a:mn>0</a:mn></a:msup></a:math> scattering and an emergent SO(8) symmetry in the scalar potential. We extend the analysis to all scattering channels with two particles in the ex…
