Global mapping of RNA N6-methyladenosine (m6A) in human subcutaneous and visceral adipose tissue reveals novel targets that correlate with clinical variables of obesity
2025-11-12 • Torunn Rønningen, Lars la Cour Poulsen, Akın Çayır, Stina Ingrid Alice Svensson, Marius Svanevik, Jens Kristoffer Hertel, Jon Kristinsson, Tom Mala...
Abstract Background Obesity is a major health challenge and fat accumulation in visceral depots is more strongly associated with metabolic comorbidities than deposition in subcutaneous depots. Epitranscriptomic regulation of gene expression by N 6 -methyladenosine (m 6 A) influences various aspects of RNA metabolism, however the m 6 A methylome in human adipose tissue and its relationship with fat distribution has not yet been investigated in detail. Methods In this study, we performed epitranscriptomic mapping of…

Comparison of Sleeve Gastrectomy vs Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass
2024-01-30 • Suzanne Hedberg, Anders Thorell, Johanna Österberg, Markku Peltonen, Ellen Andersson, Erik Näslund, Jens Kristoffer Hertel, Marius Svanevik, Erik S...
Importance Laparoscopic sleeve gastrectomy (SG) and laparoscopic Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) are widely used bariatric procedures for which comparative efficacy and safety remain unclear. Objective To compare perioperative outcomes in SG and RYGB. Design, Setting, and Participants In this registry-based, multicenter randomized clinical trial (Bypass Equipoise Sleeve Trial), baseline and perioperative data for patients undergoing bariatric surgery from October 6, 2015, to March 31, 2022, were analyzed. Patients…

Gastric Bypass vs Diet and Cardiovascular Risk Factors
2024-07-03 • Cecilia Karlsson, Line Kristin Johnson, Peter J. Greasley, Kjetil Retterstøl, Jonatan Hedberg, Martin T. Hall, Noele Hawker, Ida Robertsen, Jesper...
Importance Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) is associated with reduced cardiovascular (CV) risk factors, morbidity, and mortality. Whether these effects are specifically induced by the surgical procedure or the weight loss is unclear. Objective To compare 6-week changes in CV risk factors in patients with obesity undergoing matching caloric restriction and weight loss by RYGB or a very low-energy diet (VLED). Design, Setting, and Participants This nonrandomized controlled study (Impact of Body Weight, Low Calorie D…

Single-centre, non-randomised clinical trial at a tertiary care centre to investigate 1-year changes in social experiences and biomarkers of well-being after bariatric surgery in individuals with severe obesity: protocol for the Bariatric Surgery and Social Experiences (BaSES) study
2023-08-01 • Daniela M. Pfabigan, Jens Kristoffer Hertel, Marius Svanevik, Morten Lindberg, Uta Sailer, Jøran Hjelmesæth
Introduction Obesity is linked to increased loneliness and less enjoyment of social interactions. While bariatric surgery is the most effective treatment targeting severe obesity, there is limited understanding as to whether patients experience social interactions differently after surgery. The Bariatric Surgery and Social Experiences study is designed to assess potential changes in how much patients enjoy and engage in daily social interactions 1 year after Roux-en-Y gastric bypass (RYGB) or sleeve gastrectomy (S…

Rare variants in PLA2G7 are associated with the age of onset and disease burden of asthma
2023-06-29 • Gry B. N. Nordang, Øyvind L. Busk, Geir Klepaker, Christian M. Page, Marissa LeBlanc, Trude Aspelin, Jens Kristoffer Hertel, Øystein L. Holla, Anne...
Abstract Understanding of the contributions of rare genetic variants in asthma is limited. In this study, we investigated this contribution in 121 asthma-associated genes to the age of onset and disease burden using targeted next-generation sequencing in 576 cases of asthma. The Sequence Kernel Association Test (SKAT) was used for cumulative rare variant association analysis, with asthma onset as the outcome. The median age of onset was 12 years (IQR 5–21) and 65% of the patients developed asthma before age 16. Ni…
