Silicate precursor silane detected in cold low-metallicity brown dwarf
2025-08-20 • Jacqueline K. Faherty, Aaron Meisner, Ben Burningham, Channon Visscher, Michael Line, Genaro Suárez, Jonathan Gagné, Sherelyn Alejandro Merchan, Au...
Within 20 pc of the Sun, there are currently 29 known cold brown dwarfs-sources with measured distances and an estimated effective temperature between that of Jupiter (170 K) and approximately 500 K (ref. 1). These sources are almost all isolated and are the closest laboratories we have for detailed atmospheric studies of giant planets formed outside the Solar System. Here we report JWST observations of one such source, WISEA J153429.75-104303.3 (W1534), which we confirm is a substellar mass member of t…

Abstract Near-Earth asteroids are of great interest to the scientific community due to their proximity to Earth, making them both potential hazards and possible targets for future missions, as they are relatively easy to reach by spacecraft. A number of techniques and models can be used to constrain their physical parameters and build a comprehensive assessment of these objects. In this work, we compare physical property results obtained from improved H V absolute magnitude values, thermophysical modeling, and pol…

Asteroid Impact Hazard Warning from the Near-Earth Object Surveyor Mission
2024-06-01 • Oliver P. Lay, J. Masiero, T. Grav, Amy Mainzer, Frank J. Masci, E. L. Wright
Abstract NASA’s Near-Earth Object Surveyor mission, scheduled for launch in 2027 September, is designed to detect and characterize at least two-thirds of the potentially hazardous asteroids with diameters larger than 140 m in a nominal 5 yr mission. We describe a model to estimate the survey performance using a faster approach than the time domain survey simulator described in Mainzer et al. (2023). This model is applied to explain how the completeness for 5 and 10 yr surveys varies with orbit type and asteroid si…

<title>Abstract</title> Within 20 pc of the Sun there are 29 isolated sources with measured distances (Kirkpatrick et al. 2024) and an estimated temperature between that of Jupiter (170K) and∼500K – the cold brown dwarf regime. These objects are valuable laboratories for exploring the diversity of extrasolar atmospheres and comparing them to solar system gas giants. Here we report JWST observations of one such source, WISEA J153429.75-104303.3 (W1534), which we confirm is a substellar mass member of the Galactic h…
