IBN SINA’S OBSERVATION OF A TRANSIT OF VENUS IN 1032
2024-03-01 • M. E. Özel, E. Budding
It has been said that the Venus transit of 24 May 1032 was observed by Ibn Sina and recorded among his written output. This was critically evaluated by Goldstein (1969), who demurred on the claim. However, Kapoor's (2013) thorough review has shown that Ibn Sina could well have observed this event, giving rise to an ongoing interest in the geocentric versus heliocentric discussion, such as was picked up by Nasr ad-Din Tusi and others. This eventually culminated in the general acceptance of the Copernican world-syst…

\c{C}ukurova University Space Sciences and Solar Energy Research and Application Center (UZAYMER): I. Observing Conditions and Ongoing Projects
2021-03-08 • Arif Solmaz, Nazım Aksaker, A. Akyüz, Zühal KURT, Sinan Allak, Yasemin Aladağ, Mehmet Karakılçık, Nuri Emrahoğlu, M. E. Özel
\c{C}ukurova University Space Sciences and Solar Energy Research and Application Center (UZAYMER) was founded in 1991. In this work, we present current research in the fields of astronomy, astrophysics and solar energy and the astronomical infrastructure of the center. In addition, the astrometrological status of UZAYMER was investigated using long-term (20 years) data from the AstroGIS database and moderate-term (7 years) measurements taken from the meteorological station. Astronomical extinction coefficients, se…

Biconical reflectance, micro‐Raman, and nano‐FTIR spectroscopy of the Didim (H3‐5) meteorite: Chemical content and molecular variations
2020-11-01 • Mehmet Yeşiltaş, Melike Kaya, T. D. Glotch, R. Brunetto, A. Maturilli, J. Helbert, M. E. Özel
Abstract The Didim meteorite contains multiple lithologies and clasts of different petrologic types in a single stone. A mixture of H5 clasts in an unequilibrated H3 host was previously observed in Didim, according to the initial characterization reported in the Meteoritical Bulletin Database, providing an opportunity to investigate molecular composition that contains varying degree of equilibrium with varying mineralogy. We have taken a “from large scale to small scale” approach to spectroscopically investigate t…

The Sariçiçek howardite fall in Turkey: Source crater of <scp>HED</scp> meteorites on Vesta and impact risk of Vestoids
2019-03-17 • Ozan Ünsalan, Peter Jenniskens, Qing‐Zhu Yin, Ersin Kaygısız, Jim Albers, David L. Clark, Mikael Granvik, İskender Demirkol, İbrahim Erdoğan, Aydın...
Abstract The Sariçiçek howardite meteorite shower consisting of 343 documented stones occurred on September 2, 2015 in Turkey and is the first documented howardite fall. Cosmogenic isotopes show that Sariçiçek experienced a complex cosmic‐ray exposure history, exposed during ~12–14 Ma in a regolith near the surface of a parent asteroid, and that an ~1 m sized meteoroid was launched by an impact 22 ± 2 Ma ago to Earth (as did one‐third of all HED meteorites). SIMS dating of zircon and baddeleyite yielded 4550.4 ± 2…
