Clinicopathologic Features of Untreated Colorectal Cancer with Acellular Mucin–Only Lymph Nodes
2025-06-11 • Wenyi Luo, Shaomin Hu, Irene Riahi, Hanlin L. Wang, Nuha Shaker, Ibrahim Abukhiran, Tiffany Wang, Alexandros D. Polydorides, Adeyinka Akinsanya, Iv...
Lymph nodes (LNs) containing only acellular mucin are considered negative for metastasis in treated colorectal cancers (CRCs). However, no data exist on how to stage these LNs in untreated CRCs. We collected 63 untreated CRC cases with LNs containing only acellular mucin from 27 US institutions and 23 additional cases from the Dutch Nationwide Pathology Databank. The practice patterns of pathologists in handling such cases, as well as the clinicopathological features of these cases, were analyzed. The survival of …

The evolution of minimally invasive inguinal hernia repairs
2024-04-01 • Jennifer Xie, Donna C. Koo, Michael J. Lee, Gainosuke Sugiyama
Abstract: Groin hernia repairs are one of the most common surgeries performed in the world. The first repairs dates back to ancient Egypt in which physicians reduced the hernia and applied heat to the hernia sac. This review article explores the evolution of inguinal hernia repairs. It begins with the history of open inguinal hernia repairs and the evolution of minimally invasive approaches from laparoscopic to robotic repairs. The article also provides a comprehensive review of inguinal hernia anatomy and the myo…

Disseminated Histoplasmosis in an Immunocompetent Patient from Southern Arizona
2024-10-31 • Michael H. Crawford, Troy J Weinstein, Andrew Elliott, Robert Klein, Michael J. Lee, Conner D. Reynolds, Talha Riaz
In this review, we present a case report of an immunocompetent 58-year-old male who presented with disseminated histoplasmosis (DH) outside of the known endemic regions. Due to his atypical clinical presentation that did not fit the classical clinical picture of DH, the diagnosis was delayed. In addition, we researched DH in the immunocompetent hosts as these cases are not common and leave the patient population vulnerable to delayed diagnosis. The literature supports considering histoplasmosis in the differential…

A review of liver fibrosis and cirrhosis regression
2023-06-28 • Michael J. Lee
Cirrhosis has traditionally been considered an irreversible process of end-stage liver disease. With new treatments for chronic liver disease, there is regression of fibrosis and cirrhosis, improvement in clinical parameters (i.e. liver function and hemodynamic markers, hepatic venous pressure gradient), and survival rates, demonstrating that fibrosis and fibrolysis are a dynamic process moving in two directions. Microscopically, hepatocytes push into thinning fibrous septa with eventual perforation leaving behind…

Mitochondria of lung venular capillaries mediate lung-liver cross talk in pneumonia
2023-07-11 • Memet Emin, Michael J. Lee, Jahar Bhattacharya, Rebecca F. Hough
We report that mitochondrial injury in lung venular capillaries underlies barrier failure in pneumonia, and venular capillary uncoupling protein 2 (UCP2) causes neutrophil-mediated liver congestion. Using in situ imaging, we found that epithelial-endothelial transfer of H 2 O 2 activates UCP2, depolarizing mitochondria in venular capillaries. The conceptual advance from our findings is that mitochondrial depolarization in lung capillaries mediates liver cross talk through circulating neutrophils. Pharmacologic blo…
