Feasibility of Photoplethysmography in Detecting Arterial Stiffness in Hypertension
2025-04-29 • Parmis Karimpour, James M. May, P. A. Kyriacou
Asymptomatic peripheral artery disease (PAD) poses a silent risk, potentially leading to severe conditions if undetected. Integrating new screening tools into routine general practitioner (GP) visits could enable early detection. This study investigates the feasibility of photoplethysmography (PPG) monitoring for assessing vascular health across different blood pressure (BP) conditions. Custom femoral artery phantoms representing healthy (0.82 MPa), intermediate (1.48 MPa), and atherosclerotic (2.06 MPa) vessels w…

Evaluation of skin pigmentation effect on photoplethysmography signals using a vascular finger phantom with tunable optical and mechanical properties
2025-11-25 • Laura Osorio-Sanchez, James M. May, P. A. Kyriacou
These findings suggest there is a measurable impact of skin pigmentation on the PPG signal and highlight the need for further research to improve the equity of light-based sensing technologies across all populations. We provide an advancement for future work in developing in vitro models to assess optical sensing performance across diverse skin tones.

Arterial stiffness assessment using PPG feature extraction and significance testing in an in vitro cardiovascular system
2024-01-23 • Redjan Ferizoli, Parmis Karimpour, James M. May, P. A. Kyriacou
Abstract Cardiovascular diseases (CVDs) remain the leading cause of global mortality, therefore understanding arterial stiffness is essential to developing innovative technologies to detect, monitor and treat them. The ubiquitous spread of photoplethysmography (PPG), a completely non-invasive blood-volume sensing technology suitable for all ages, highlights immense potential for arterial stiffness assessment in the wider healthcare setting outside specialist clinics, for example during routine visits to a General …

Ascorbate insufficiency disrupts glutamatergic signaling and alters electroencephalogram phenotypes in a mouse model of Alzheimer's disease
2024-07-13 • Rebecca A. Buchanan, Yuhan Wang, James M. May, Fiona E. Harrison
Clinical studies have reported that increased epileptiform and subclinical epileptiform activity can be detected in many patients with an Alzheimer's disease (AD) diagnosis using electroencephalogram (EEG) and this may correlate with poorer cognition. Ascorbate may have a specific role as a neuromodulator in AD as it is released concomitantly with glutamate reuptake following excitatory neurotransmission. Insufficiency may therefore result in an exacerbated excitatory/inhibitory imbalance in neuronal signaling. Us…
