A Novel Wax Based Piezo Actuator for Autonomous Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (Piezo-DALK)
2021-09-27 • Justin D. Opfermann, Mladen Barbic, Mikhail Khrenov, Shoujing Guo, Nicolas R. Sarfaraz, Jun Kang, Axel Krieger
This paper reports the design and evaluation of a novel piezo based actuator for needle drive in autonomous Deep Anterior Lamellar Keratoplasty (piezo-DALK). The actuator weighs less than 8g and is 20mm × 20mm × 10.5mm in size, making it ideal for eye-mounted applications. Mean open loop positional deviation was 1.17 ± 3.15um, and system repeatability and accuracy were 17.16um and 18.33um, respectively. Stall force was found to vary linearly with the cooling cycle and the actuator achieved a maximum drive force of…

Geometric Feasibility for Defense Manifold Maintenance in Planar Reach-Avoid Games Against a Fast Evader
2021-01-01 • Mikhail Khrenov, Phillip Rivera-Ortiz, Yancy Diaz-Mercado
This paper provides a cooperative control strategy for a team of pursuers to capture a fast evader. Closed-form expressions are provided for a bound on the sufficient number of pursuer agents for geometric feasibility for defense manifold maintenance in a time-bounded planar multi-player reach-avoid game. In particular, the analytic bound provides a practical lower bound on the pursuer team size to partition the bounded game domain, thus preventing the evader from reaching its target without getting within a finit…

Since the first reports of a novel coronavirus (SARS-CoV-2) in December 2019, over 33 million people have been infected worldwide and approximately 1 million people worldwide have died from the disease caused by this virus, COVID-19. In the United States alone, there have been approximately 7 million cases and over 200,000 deaths. This outbreak has placed an enormous strain on healthcare systems and workers. Severe cases require hospital care, and 8.5% of patients require mechanical ventilation in an intensive car…

Autocycle: Design, Construction, and Validation of an Autonomous Bicycle
2021-01-01 • Michael P. Allen, Jacob Bartolomei, Jeremy G. Carter, Cooper Grill, Mikhail Khrenov, John Mirenzi, Joseph O'Leary, Isaac Rose, Evan Ruderman, Andon...
Efficient urban transportation has time and time again proved to be a difficult problem to rectify. One modern solution is the bike-sharing system, where many bicycles are available either at hubs or spread across a city for short-term use. However, usage is limited to those located close enough to a bicycle hub that traveling to and from it is time-effective. As for hubless bike-shares, bicycles require redistribution over time to remain conveniently available to many. We propose the creation of an electric bicyc…
