Proliferative Kidney Disease in Sympatric Naturally Reproducing Populations of Rainbow and Brown Trout in Southern Peri‐Alpine Germany
2025-01-15 • Albert Ros, Jan Baer, Patrick Bartolin, Alexander Brinker
ABSTRACT The decline of central European salmonid populations is exacerbated by global warming impacts on disease and interspecific competition. In this context, sympatric naturally reproducing populations of rainbow trout Oncorhynchus mykiss and brown trout Salmo trutta were sampled in three rivers in southern Germany where the myxozoan parasite T. bryosalmonae , the causative agent of the temperature‐associated proliferative kidney disease (PKD), is widely distributed. As expected, parasite prevalence and kidney…

Trophic ecophysiology of the native green shore crab, Carcinus maenas, and the invasive Asian shore crab, Hemigrapsus sanguineus, in the rocky intertidal of Helgoland (North Sea)
2023-11-01 • Reinhard Saborowski, Patrick Bartolin, Marie Koch, Simon Jungblut
The brachyuran crabs Carcinus maenas and Hemigrapsus sanguineus belong to the most ´successful´ invaders along the oceans coasts. In 2009, H. sanguineus appeared at the rocky intertidal of the island of Helgoland in the North Sea, where it encounters the native Green shore crab, C. maenas . H. sanguineus established a self-sustaining population, approaching in numbers and biomass that of C. maenas . Both species are considered to be opportunistic omnivores with variable food preferences and, thus, are potential co…

Endangered spined loach Cobitis species in Southwest Germany: A complex network of native, hybrid and newly emerged populations
2023-03-13 • Samuel Roch, Patrick Bartolin, Pascal Vonlanthen, Jan Baer, Simon Grundmüller, Laura S. Epp, Alexander Brinker
Abstract Successful conservation of cryptic species such as representatives of the genus Cobitis presents a challenge for fishery managers. Only Cobitis taenia L. is currently assumed to occur in southwest Germany, where it is classified as critically endangered. Established genetic markers and eDNA analysis identified three Cobitis species in the study area. Cobitis taenia and Cobitis elongatoides were widely distributed in the Rhine River system, primarily forming hybrid species complexes in which polyploid indi…

The making of sedimentary DNA: Insights from distribution patterns of DNA in sediments
2020-03-10 • Laura S. Epp, Anan Ibrahim, Yi Wang, Lisa Gutbrod, Patrick Bartolin, Franziska Chucholl, Rebecca Kuehner, David Schleheck, Peter Andreas Seeber
<p>Sedimentary ancient DNA has by now become a recognized source of information on past biodiversity change, but our understanding of its dynamics and taphonomy is still limited. While for environmental DNA in water, dedicated investigations on its provenance and degradation are being increasingly carried out, we know very little about sedimentary DNA, in particular with respect to aquatic organisms. We are therefore conducting investigations on the distribution of DNA in surface sediments and a shor…
