Road map for the tuning of hadronic interaction models with accelerator-based and astroparticle data

In high-energy and astroparticle physics, event generators play an essential role, even in the simplest data analyses. As analysis techniques become more sophisticated, e.g. based on deep neural networks, their correct description of the observed event characteristics becomes even more important. Physical processes occurring in hadronic collisions are simulated within a Monte Carlo framework. A major challenge is the modeling of hadron dynamics at low momentum transfer, which includes the initial and final phases …

Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Rays from Neutrino-Emitting Tidal Disruption Events
2024-10-24 • Pavlo Plotko, Walter Winter, Cecilia Lunardini, Chengchao Yuan
We revisit the Ultra-High-Energy Cosmic Ray (UHECRs) production in Tidal Disruption Events (TDEs) in the light of recent neutrino-TDE associations. We use an isotropically emitting source-propagation model, which has been developed to describe the neutrino production in AT2019dsg, AT2019fdr, and AT2019aalc. These TDEs have strong dust echoes in the infrared range, which are potentially linked with the neutrino production. A mechanism where neutrinos originate from cosmic ray scattering on infrared photons implies …

Differences between the Pierre Auger Observatory and Telescope Array Spectra: Systematic Effects or Indication of a Local Source of Ultra-high-energy Cosmic Rays?
2023-08-01 • Pavlo Plotko, A. van Vliet, Xavier Rodrigues, Walter Winter
Abstract The Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO) and Telescope Array (TA) collaborations report significant differences in the observed energy spectra of ultra-high-energy cosmic rays (UHECRs) above 30 EeV. In this work we present a joint fit of TA and PAO data using the rigidity-dependent maximum energy model, including a full marginalization over all relevant parameters. We test two possible scenarios to explain these differences. One is that they are due to complex energy-dependent experimental systematics; the othe…

Differences between PAO and TA spectra: Systematics or indication of a local astrophysical source?
2023-07-25 • Pavlo Plotko, A. van Vliet, Xavier Rodrigues, Walter Winter
We present a joint fit of ultra-high-energy cosmic ray (UHECR) source scenarios to data from the Telescope Array (TA) and Pierre Auger Observatory (PAO) experiments [arXiv:2208.12274]. Our simulations account for the propagation of UHECRs through extragalactic space, considering a wide range of source parameters. We fit the spectrum and composition observed by both experiments, taking into account systematic errors. We compare three scenarios to explain the differences in the measured UHECR spectrum above 30 EeV. …

Spectral softening in core-collapse supernova remnant expanding inside wind-blown bubble
2022-03-18 • Samata Das, Robert Brose, D M-A Meyer, M. Pohl, I. Sushch, Pavlo Plotko
Context. Galactic cosmic rays (CRs) are widely assumed to arise from diffusive shock acceleration, specifically at shocks in supernova remnants (SNRs). These shocks expand in a complex environment, particularly in the core-collapse scenario as these SNRs evolve inside the wind-blown bubbles created by their progenitor stars. The CRs at core-collapse SNRs may carry spectral signatures of that complexity. Aims. We study particle acceleration in the core-collapse SNR of a progenitor with an initial mass of 60 M ⊙ and…
