Reframing the narrative of magic wind in Arthur Waley’s translation of Journey to the West: another look at the abridged translation
2023-11-27 • Feng Wang, Liu Ke-qiang, Philippe Humblé
Abstract This article examines Arthur Waley’s abridged translation of “Journey to the West”, titled “Monkey”, and its influence on magic wind narrativity using narrative theory and (re)framing concepts. The research categorises the narrative significance of the magical wind in the source text and highlights its powers as destruction, transport and transformation. In contrast, these elements seem subdued in “Monkey”. Waley’s reframing employs strategies, such as (I) temporal and spatial reframing; (II) selective ap…

Nihon Goes West: Exploring the Non-Translation of Honorifics in the English Subtitles of a Japanese Video Game
2023-01-24 • Caroline Almeida Santos, Philippe Humblé
Japan has a long tradition when it comes to graphic novels, animated series, films, and, more recently, video games. This popularity has gained international attention in recent decades, creating a market for Japanese-to-English translation. An example of such translations is the localized version of the video game Yakuza 0. A Bibliometric Analysis of Translation Studies: A Case Study on Chinese Canon The Journey to the West
2019-10-01 • Feng Wang, Philippe Humblé, Wen Chen
A Chinese classic novel The Journey to the West (Chinese: 西游记, pinyin: Xi You Ji) has been yielding large volumes of English renditions across genres and media in the past 120 years starting in 1895. This body of renderings gives considerable material for research on how particularly translations have been handled. To give an overview of this research, this article proposes a bibliometric analysis to sketch a map of the translation studies conducted so far on The Journey to the West. A series of queries are made: …
