日本におけるサザエの分布範囲を網羅する11地域から標本を収集しミトコンドリア16S rDNAとCOI塩基配列及び殻の棘タイプを分析した。塩基配列は2つのハプログループに分けられ,ハプログループ間の平均塩基置換率は16S rDNAで1.247%,COIで1.429%であった。日本海-東シナ海と太平洋の集団間でその頻度が大きく異なっていた。また各海域内地域集団間にも有意な遺伝的分化が検出された。ごく近隣の地域間でも棘の有無や大小に大きな変異がみられ,環境要因の影響が示唆された。
