放射線で単糖類,少糖類およびセルロース類似高分子化合物中に生じたラジカルの常温の電子スピン共鳴吸収(ESR)を測定し,それらの熱処理による変化をしらべた。またショ糖の弾結晶に放射線を照射し,生ずるESRの磁気異方性を測定した。照射した砂糖によりアクリルアミド水溶液が重合することから・これら物質中に生じたラジカルの反応牲を確認し,これら物質中に生じたラジカルの固体状態での気体に対する非反応性は水素結合によるものと結論した。
