IMA-CNMNC guidelines for assessing the natural geological origin of minerals Open
Establishing whether a newly discovered solid phase qualifies as a mineral of natural geological origin requires a thorough evaluation of its context of occurrence. This paper builds on the existing guidelines of the Commission on New Mine…

Silica substituted carbonate apatite: synthesis and analytical challenges Open
We experimentally demonstrate a coupled Type-B substitution mechanism for carbonate and silica in apatite, namely 2PO 4 3− → SiO 4 4− + CO 3 2− , and critically evaluate multiple analytical approaches for carbonate in apatite.

Environmental stability of a uranium-plutonium-carbide phase Open
A plutonium-rich carbide, (U,Pu)(Al,Fe) 3 C 3 , was discovered in a hot particle from the Maralinga nuclear testing site in South Australia. The particle was produced between 1960 and 1963 and has been exposed to ambient conditions since t…

Natural cobalt–manganese oxide nanoparticles: speciation, detection and implications for cobalt cycling Open
Environmental context Cobalt is a technologically critical element due to its uses in the green energy transition, but its cycling is poorly constrained in surface environments. We determined the form of cobalt in naturally enriched soils …

Dimorphism of [Bi2O2(OH)](NO3) – the ordered <i>Pna</i>21 structure at 100 K Open
The re-investigation of [Bi 2 O 2 (OH)](NO 3 ), dioxidodibismuth(III) hydroxide nitrate, on the basis of single-crystal X-ray diffraction data revealed an apparent structural phase transition of a crystal structure determined previously (s…
