高分化型ヒト肝癌由来細胞株“HuH-7”は，1982年にCancer Researchにその樹立を報告した．HuH-7は，当時の岡山大学医学部附属癌源研究施設病理部門（故佐藤二郎教授）の下で樹立し，これまで多くの研究分野で利用され，世界的に有名な肝癌細胞株となっている．本稿では，有用性の高い分化機能を有するヒト肝癌細胞株HuH-7について，肝細胞癌の腫瘍マーカーであるα-fetoprotein（AFP）を中心に，この細胞株を用いた研究分野に関する詳細を紹介する．
