Application of the WRF Model for Operational Wind Power Forecasting in Northeast Brazil
2025-10-31 • Thiago Luiz do Vale Silva, Alexandre Sylvio Vieira da Costa, Olga de Castro Vilela, Ramiro Brito Willmersdorf, José Carlos de Melo Vieira Júnior, L...
Northeastern Brazil (NEB) has a high potential for wind energy generation, making it a strategic area for the development of this renewable source. However, the region’s complex wind regime, driven by interactions between large-scale atmospheric systems, local circulations, and coastal topography, presents significant challenges for weather forecasting and wind energy applications. Despite this, detailed assessments of forecast performance using mesoscale models remain limited. The main objective was to develop an…

An attribution study of very intense rainfall events in Eastern Northeast Brazil
2024-05-28 • Francisco das Chagas Vasconcelos Júnior, Mariam Zachariah, Thiago Luiz do Vale Silva, Edvânia Santos, Caio A. S. Coelho, Lincoln Muniz Alves, Eduar...
Severe floods and landslides in Eastern Northeast Brazil in May 2022 led to severe impacts with human losses and material damage. These disasters were a direct consequence of extremely heavy rainfall days. A rapid attribution study was performed to assess the role of anthropogenic climate change in 7 and 15-day mean rainfall over this region. A dense network of 389 weather stations was analysed resulting in 79 selected stations containing consistent and spatially well-distributed data over the study region with re…

Influence of sea stratification and troposphere stability over the Coastal Squall Lines of Eastern Amazon
2024-02-06 • Douglas Vieira da Silva, Ricardo de Camargo, Dóris Veleda, Thiago Luiz do Vale Silva
<title>Abstract</title> This study investigates the relationship between oceanic and atmospheric parameters and their relation with the occurrence of Coastal Squall Lines (CSL) in the Eastern Amazon. Utilizing a minimalist set of stability and stratification parameters, results indicate a significant coherence in the 8 and 12-month period in bulk parameters, potentially linked to the discharge of the Amazon River and the convective regime of Western Tropical Atlantic. A cross-wavelet analysis shed light on the rel…

Assessing the Tropical South Atlantic atmosphere thermodynamics under distinct Sea Surface Temperature patterns

Abstract Northeast Brazil (NEB) is a susceptible region to the occurrence of extreme rainfall events. Sea surface temperature (SST) is used as an indicator for predicting intense weather events in this region. The westernmost Tropical South Atlantic region, also called Southern Atlantic Warm Pool (SAWP), is characterized by a source of heat and humidity which creates atmospheric instability for the NEB. In June 2010 the eastern coast of NEB (ENEB)was influenced by heavy rainfall, causing flash floods and landslide…

Ocean–Atmosphere Feedback during Extreme Rainfall Events in Eastern Northeast Brazil
2018-03-16 • Thiago Luiz do Vale Silva, Dóris Veleda, Moacyr Araújo, Pedro Tyaquiçã
Abstract The coupled ocean–atmosphere–wave–sediment transport model and the Weather Research and Forecasting (WRF) atmospheric model were used to simulate extreme rainfall events from 10 to 25 June 2010 in eastern Northeast Brazil (ENEB). The simulations aimed at investigating the improvements from using a coupled ocean–atmospheric model of meteorological systems as the ocean–atmosphere interactions intensified during the period when flood events occurred in ENEB. In June 2010, the sea surface temperature (SST) wa…
