Regulation of working memory switches from striatal dopamine D2-receptor to D1-receptor neurons under high cognitive load

Working memory (WM) is a fundamental cognitive function crucial adaptive behavior. The intricate interplay between the frontal cortex and striatum in governing WM maintenance and updating remains a central question. In this study, we employed optogenetics to demonstrate that inhibiting both dorsomedial striatum (DMS) D 1 R- and D 2 R-neurons enhances WM, while their activation impairs it across T-maze and operant-based delayed-non-match-to-place (DNMTP) paradigms in mice. Notably, these neurons selectively modulat…

40 Hz Light Flickering Promotes Sleep through Cortical Adenosine Signaling

Abstract Flickering light stimulation has emerged as a promising non-invasive neuromodulation strategy to alleviate neuropsychiatric disorders. However, the lack of a neurochemical underpinning has hampered its therapeutic development. Here, we demonstrate that light flickering triggered an immediate and sustained increase (up to 3 hours after flickering) in extracellular adenosine levels in the primary visual cortex and other brain regions, as a function of light frequency, intensity, and wavelength, with maximal…

Neural representation and modulation of volitional motivation in response to escalating efforts
2022-12-19 • Liping Zhang, Chang Liu, Xiaopeng Zhou, Hui Zhou, Shengtao Luo, Qin Wang, Zhimo Yao, Jiang‐Fan Chen
Abstract Task‐dependent volitional control of the selected neural activity in the cortex is critical to neuroprosthetic learning to achieve reliable and robust control of the external device. The volitional control of neural activity is driven by a motivational factor (volitional motivation), which directly reinforces the target neurons via real‐time biofeedback. However, in the absence of motor behaviour, how do we evaluate volitional motivation? Here, we defined the criterion (Δ F / F ) of the calcium fluorescen…

A Joint Lateral Motion—Stereo Constraint
2022-01-25 • Yiya Chen, Zhimo Yao, Zhifen He, Ziyun Cheng, Pi‐Chun Huang, Seung Hyun Min, Fan Lü, Robert F. Hess, Jiawei Zhou
We report that lateral motion modulates human global depth perception. This motion/stereo constraint is related to motion velocity not stimulus temporal frequency. We speculate that the processing of motion-based stereopsis of the kind reported here occurs in dorsal extrastriate cortex.

Response of Chinese sea buckthorn clonal growth and photosynthetic physiological mechanisms toward a soil moisture gradient
2021-07-15 • Shiqie Bai, Kunkun Nie, Shasha Ji, S Chen, Zhimo Yao, G. Li, Chaonan Tang, Fu Xing Guo
Studies have reported on the regulation of clonal growth in Chinese sea buckthorn in response to environmental resource availability, but these studies have been limited to external mechanisms. In this report, we controlled irrigation to generate a soil moisture gradient in order to examine the photosynthetic physiological mechanisms regulating clonal growth in this species. The results indicated that as irrigation intensity increased, the soil water content increased vertically and tissue water content first incr…
