The ability to study the temperature dependence of material properties for various microstructures under extreme loading conditions enables a greater understanding of a range of high pressure, high strain rate phenomena, extending from space and planetary science to fundamental material science. In this study, we describe an apparatus designed to pre-heat or pre-cool targets to temperatures ranging between80-800 K for laser-driven shock experiments, and we further review the implementation of such an apparatus in laser-shock experiments and comments on potential future capabilities.
