Emilia Pérez had its world premiere on 18 May 2024 at the 77th Cannes Film Festival, where it won the Jury Prize and the Best Actress award for its female ensemble. It was theatrically released by Pathé in France on 21 August 2024. In Mexico, the film was panned by audiences and critics, who criticized its cultural representation, songwriting, use of stereotypes, and Spanish dialogue (especially Gomez’s acting). The film won the European Film Award for Best Film. At the 97th Academy Awards, Emilia Pérez received a leading 13 nominations, including Best Picture and Best Actress (Gascón, who is the first openly trans woman to be nominated in the category).
