A major geopolitical controversy is unfolding in the Horn of Africa after Israel announced its formal recognition of Somaliland, a self-declared breakaway region of Somalia. The move has triggered fierce backlash across the Middle East, Africa and global power centres. Hamas condemned the recognition as a dangerous precedent, accusing Israel of seeking false legitimacy and warning against any attempt to use Somaliland as a destination for Palestinians displaced from Gaza. Qatar has categorically rejected the decision, saying it violates international law, undermines Somalia’s sovereignty and threatens regional stability.
