Israel has detonated a geopolitical shockwave by becoming the first country in the world to officially recognize Somaliland as an independent nation. Benjamin Netanyahu signed the recognition papers live on a phone call with Somaliland’s president, calling the moment “historic” and promising to connect Somaliland to the Abraham Accords. But Washington is stepping back with US President Donald Trump has refused to back Israel’s move — triggering an international backlash. Somalia has called the recognition a direct attack on its sovereignty. The African Union, Egypt, Saudi Arabia, Turkey and Djibouti have all condemned Israel’s decision, warning it could destabilize the Horn of Africa and the wider Middle East.
